What is the Downtown Fitchburg Transformation Project?

This guide provides a brief overview of the work that will be taking place, the other projects it aligns with, and an overview of the exciting revitalization work taking place downtown.

VIDEO:  Two Way Main Street and Boulder Drive Informational Meeting

The Main/Boulder project will convert Main Street and Boulder Drive to two-way traffic, implementing a number of Complete Streets improvements along the way. The end-result will be a project that works better for both cars and people, and will help support the revitalization of downtown Fitchburg.

Finished Designs

  • The finished designs will be completed in late spring of 2020. The project will then go out to bid, with a target award date of June 2020. The work will begin in late summer, and is anticipated to be completed in fall of 2021.

Project Updates

May 30, 2022

In observation of Memorial Day, there will be no work performed on Monday, May 30th. Starting on Tuesday, MTK will continue to put in curbing and sidewalks throughout the project. Electric Light will be working on relocating signals and street lights throughout the project.

Notice: Cushing Street is permanently closed as work to convert the street into a pedestrian plaza continues.

Businesses will be open during this work.

May 23, 2022

This week, MTK will continue to put in curbing and sidewalks throughout the project. Electric Light will also continue to work on relocating signals on Main Street, Boulder Drive and Putnam Street.

Notice: Cushing Street is permanently closed as work to convert the street into a pedestrian plaza continues.

Businesses will be open during this work.

May 16, 2022

This week, curbing and sidewalk by MTK will be going in throughout the project. Electric Light will be working on relocation of signals on Main Street, Boulder Drive and Putnam Street. 

Notice: Cushing Street will be remain closed as work to convert the street into a pedestrian plaza continues.

Businesses will be open during this work.

May 9, 2022

This week, curbing and sidewalk by MTK will be going in throughout the project. Electric Light will be working on relocation of signals on Main Street, Boulder Drive and Putnam Street. PJ Albert will be excavating across from City Hall, reconfiguring the road and setting islands. 

Notice: Starting Friday, May 6th, Cushing Street will be closed, as work begins to convert the street into a pedestrian plaza.

Businesses will be open during this work.

May 2, 2022

This week, Electric Light will be installing mast arms and PJ Albert will be working on excavation and curbing throughout the project. 

Notice: Once the curb is set for the new islands, Main Street westbound will become one-lane road. This transition will occur on Main Street near City Hall.

April 25, 2022

This week, PJ Albert will continue to install new street lights on Boulder Drive and begin the installation of light bases and pull boxes on Main Street. The excavation of wheelchair ramps throughout the project will begin on Tuesday and continue throughout the week.

April 18, 2022

During this week, PJ Albert plans to install lights and conduits on Boulder Drive and  Mill Street. PJ Albert is also proposing to do full depth work including paving at the intersection of Main Street and Boulder Drive at City Hall.

April 11, 2022

From Monday to Wednesday, PJ Albert plans to install light bases, handholes and conduits on Boulder Drive and also install conduits on Main Street around city hall. The installation of light bases, handholes and conduits on Boulder Drive will begin on Thursday and continue through Friday.

April 4, 2022

On Monday, PJ Albert plans to continue electrical conduit work on Boulder Drive/Putnam Street intersection and also start the removal of existing lights and bases on Boulder Drive, which will continue throughout the week. In addition, the removal of existing islands on Boulder Drive/Main Street and installation of new HAPCO lights along Boulder Drive will start on Wednesday.

Businesses will be open during this work. 

March 28, 2022

On Monday, PJ Albert plans to continue electrical conduit work on Boulder Drive/Putnam Street intersection. From Tuesday through Friday, this work will expand to the Main Street/Putnam Street intersection.

Businesses will be open during this work. 

March 20, 2022

On Monday, PJ Albert plans to continue electrical conduit work on Putnam Street. On Tuesday and Wednesday, this work will expand to the Boulder Drive/Putnam Street intersection. Thursday and Friday, the work will move to the intersection of Main Street and Putnam Street.

Businesses will be open during this work. 

March 13, 2022

Spring construction season has begun! Starting Tuesday, PJ Albert will be performing sidewalk and electrical conduit work at Mill and Cushing Streets. On Wednesday, PJ Albert will be performing some trench work on Putnam Street.

November 12, 2021

P.J. Albert Inc. will continue working on installing foundations and mast arms for new traffic signals and controls at Boulder Drive’s intersection with Putnam Street.

The sidewalk subcontractor will also be completing the installation new curbing and sidewalk on Boulder Drive in various locations, including west of Newton Place around the 166-200 Boulder Drive campus and in front of the Mill Street Parking Garage. They will also be installing sidewalks and curbing along Newton Place, and doing the same in select locations along Main Street. The work is anticipated to be complete by the end of the week, at which point P.J. Albert will then conduct patch paving, as needed, in select areas. Expect temporary closures and delays. 

November 5, 2021

P.J. Albert Inc. will continue working on installing foundations and mast arms for new traffic signals and controls at the intersection of both Main Street and Boulder Drive’s intersections with Putnam Street.

The sidewalk subcontractor will also be installing new curbing and sidewalk on Boulder Drive in various locations, including west of Newton Place around the 166-200 Boulder Drive campus and in front of the Mill Street Parking Garage. They will also be installing sidewalks and curbing along Newton Place, and will begin work doing the same in select locations along Main Street. Expect temporary closures and delays. 

October 29, 2021

P.J. Albert Inc. will continue working on installing foundations and mast arms for new traffic signals and controls at the intersection of Boulder Drive and Putnam Street, as rain last week delayed this work.  Their sidewalk subcontractor will also be installing new curbing and sidewalk on Boulder Drive in various locations, including west of Newton Place around the 166-200 Boulder Drive campus and in front of the Mill Street Parking Garage. Again the rain last week delayed this work. Expect temporary closures and delays on Boulder Drive.
